Are you using a heavy pick? That is great for developing accuracy and responsiveness.
RE: the raking noise...if you use a heavy pick (2mm or so) you may find you get pick noise. Try to hold your pic ...

Apparently Freddie Green used bronze strings.
I kind of like flat wounds on my L50.
Just normal roundwounds in the guage you like are cheap so just try them out.

if you get a sound that allows you to express yourself with your hands then it really does not matter about what era it sounds like. The right notes at the right time are all that really matters.

tell me if this seems obvious, but an old standard is to tag the ending (you asked as a student) which means replaying the last 4 (usually) bars 3 times.
