Hi

This is my first post, although I've been lurking and reading the site for a few weeks now.

I've messed around with the electric bass for the last eight years, but never practised as much as I should. I never really got to grips with music theory. The bass did get me into jazz however.

I picked up a new Yamaha SA500 two weeks ago, which I've strung with Thomastik flatwound 12s and am, for now, running through my Trace Elliot bass combo.

Favourite guitarists include Pete Cosey, Sonny Sharrock, John Abercrombie, Django Reinhardt, Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Frisell, John Paricelli and David Okumu.

Currently working on the first chapter of Jody Fisher's 'Beginning Jazz Guitar' book. It's taking a while to get used to thin strings and narrrow spacing! Can't get the most basic open position and barre chords to ring true yet (keeping muffling at least one string per chord).

I have Mark Levine's 'Jazz Theory' book and a couple of fake books (which have been sitting on a shelf for the last two years) to make a start on once I have the basics sorted.

This seems like a friendly, informative site and I look forward to contributing and sharing my progress on the guitar.

I'm currently in SW Zone 2. Just starting out on the guitar, so obviously not gigging yet. Am going to be taking guitar lessons from David Okumu, a great guitarist from the F-ire collective ( www.f-ire.com ).
