Really glad to have found this fourm. My name is Guy Michetti and I'm from New York City.

In only the past few weeks have I started "really" getting back into playing, or at least attempting to play Jazz. I stopped playing music for over 15 years and only in the last 4 years have I started playing again. Mostly acoustic doing Folk, Blues, Bluegrass and Country.

I knew it the back of my mind at some point I'd find myself walkin' down the jazz highway again. And it started with a drummer who asked me to sit in on a 'jazz' gig last month. I dusted off my old ES-175, put new strings on and yelled to no one in particular, where are those Real Books?? Cool To make a long story short, the vocalist kept changing keys on almost each tune so I had to transpose on the spot. Some hairy moments but overall I had a blast and I am now once again, swingin' down that jazzy road.

I should mention that I used to gig a lot when I was younger, studied classical music and performance in college and played in the college Jazz Band. Now, all I want to do is get the songs back in my head and in my fingers as I find that the theory is coming back faster then my ablility to make it come out of the axe.

So any suggestions, hints, and any personal experiences on getting back and playing would be most appreciated.

Main influences in Jazz are Wes of course, but also Joe Pass, Pat Martino and Jim Hall. Horn players I love are Bird and Diz, Miles and Louie too, but Paul Desmond, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown as well. Well there are others, but I used to listen to these guys alot. But to me Wes Montogomery has aways been my major influence. And so, in the past few weeks of course I've gone nuts with listening to him. Oh and I just, believe it or not discovered John Pizzarelli who I really like as well. I told ya, it's been a while! Cool

One more thing, what is the current state of Jazz? I really have been quite out of touch and the last time I was current was back in the early 80's so what's hot in the jazz world? Not just guitar, but overall.

PS I found this fourm when I was looking into buying a D'Angelico Excel.

Welcome, Guy. Since you are in NYC maybe you can catch some of the
IAJE conference Jan. 10-13. It's at the NY Hilton,53rd & 6th or
thereabouts. It's the largest jazz conference in the world and totally
fabulous. All sorts of concerts, clinics, etc. I think Jim Hall is going to
be there this year. There are always several big name guitarists there.
Sometimes John P. and Russell Malone are there. It's def. worth the
time and $. Since you wouldn't have to pay for a hotel, the $ really isn't
too bad for all the people you can see and meet.
Anyway, Welcome.

so not to be rude, and use someone else's thread for my own evil purposes, I'll take this opportunity to say:

hello Guy and welcome to the forum.

the current state of Jazz?
when did you americans get another state? is it near Hawaii? I would go live in a Jazz state if it were near Hawaii.

enjoy.
Very Happy

obviously that spit out coffee was meant for the spelling area of my brain.

LMAO !!

Actually Nezumi, although we're keeping quiet about it, we've added a couple of states including the one that Bob Woodward wrote about ("State of Denial").

cheers,

Ahhh, Nezumi, there's nothin like starting the New Year off with a good 'ol spray across the kitchen. Did it come out of your nose? You know you've hit "pay-dirt" when it does that. Surprised Later Tater.
