i'm still waiting to hear somebody do something new with this style. I see a lot of people on the internetz doing this kind of thing, and doing it well, but it really bores me. It's impressive to watch, but compositionally there isn't much going on.
Maybe I'm being simplistic, but I feel like every time I see somebody doing this stuff it's always the same general vibe, the same chord progressions. _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. then again, he could always just have his girlfriend play the bongos and dig in a little more with some variation... |
Yeah Igiro I agree. It was interesting to watch if nothing else. And some variation...you hit the nail on the head. That's my one problem with guys who play in a style like that. Many times the songs don't seem to really go anywhere. It sounds all in the same key or like thier just playing in circles or something. He's definitely a talented guy though. I would like to hear him with a good (stand up) bass player and some percussion or something to add another dimension too it. _________________ LISTEN!!! |

Y'all hit the nail in the head - it does seem to go in circles musically. I've just never seen anybody play like this before. What do they call this style?

Hehe, I like it, but I agree to you all.
tunes in this style seems to be too equal to each other.....
They should try to experiment a little with some alternate tunings. It woulnd´t be hard since there rarely arent improvisation, and the main reason it seems to be the same many times, is propably the limitted number of standard (Not outside) open string chords.....

Yup he's talented and obviously a real creative guy. I'd like to hear him with some other instruments backing him up to help flesh it out a bit more. A bass maybe even a piano? _________________ LISTEN!!! |

but no, that's the thing, this thing has been going on for YEARS, and he's doing the exact same thing everybody else does! _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. Right Jake it's nothing new really. The founder of Windham Hill records (Will Ackerman) has been playing that style since the 70's. That is Alt. tuning solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar pieces. And his protoge the late Micheal Hedges brought it to a wider audience. But unforunately he's no longer with us.
He's worth checking out though if that style of playing sparks your interest/curiosity. Will Ackerman also has some instructional or tab books availible on playing in that style I believe.
I know a lot of folks might not be familiar with this type of music. But this guy was a real innovator for that type of guitar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Hedges
If you want to hear somebody who can really blow with that type stuff also check out Alex De Grassi. _________________ LISTEN!!! |

Yeah, to my knowledge Hedges was really the dude who brought this stuff into the mainstream a bit _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. But I am sure that it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." - Aaron Copland |
