I hear he was a geunuine Bear to work for...Just a shame you don't have many venues outside the halls of education, that support the Big Bands anymore..

Im not one of those who dosn´t like drum solos, but I think that was way too much of a techinal solo.
This can maybe have something to do with the fact that there is a whole big band where nobody can get tricked and miss the spot where they get back in.......
But he´s a good drummer though......

JakeJew, for ''melodic'' drum solos, you might want to look for Horácio Hernandez, he is fantastic.
He also imply tuned woodblocks or cowbells sometimes.... Laughing Its really cool....

Joel Rosenblatt is also one of my favourite Jazz/Latin Jazz drummers.
Him and Dave Weckl have some similar things, but, IMO, it have allways sounded more to me like Rosenblatt valorizes groove and being in the right place at the right time, where Weckl might seem to bother alot more about his technical skills.

Later..........

Bjřrn.

Man, I used to HATE drum solos with a passion. I thought they were boring, uncreative and for the most part a waste of time and space.
But, that was until I learned how to listen to them! I was trying to listen for a Charlie Parker type solo-which obviously, a drummer cannot do. But, they can somewhat "emulate" it, by using the different patterns and/or drums (toms instead of snare, etc...).
Now, I listen to that Buddy Rich solo, and it is melodic. That's how a drummer "should" play a solo. Very creative, in his use of rhythm, phrasing, and ideas applied.

bjorn, I feel the opposite way, I hear the guys you mention as being more technical.

I'm actually working out of a Horacio Hernandez book right now, I found the Rich video while searching for videos of Hernandez. Most drum solos don't really do much for me, but I've always thought Buddy Rich had great energy.

Also, I've enjoyed the small bit of Jim Black I've heard.
