Brazil. Very cool. The home of the Bossa Nova. One of my favorite guitarists was Laurindo Almeida. Wonderful stuff. The man could play.

That was nice. I had never heard of him before....
I like Bossa nova alot, however, my intention travelling to Brazil was to study Hermeto Pascoal and others in that genre.
Do you know him..??

I have never heard of Pascoal. I did a YouTube search however, and gave him a listen. What a resource YouTube is. He's out there.  Very interesting music, and a very interesting, and varied approach to his music.

I first heard Almeida as a young kid. At that time I was listening to Hendrix, Clapton, and the rest in the rock genre in the early 60's. Almeida was playing with Stan Getz, again playing in the Bossa Nova style. It just blew me away, and still gives me goose bumbs to this day to listen to it. Stan Getz himself was also a true master.
A couple of years back it inspirded me to write a song in that genre. Or there abouts. Here is a sample of my playing.

I look forward to hearing some of your playing as well. Just going over some of the posts here, I will prolly find a lot to learn from you guys. I have a pretty good self-taught backround in theory....but it looks like I have a lot more to learn. |

Welcome, Dux. I love Brazilian music too, and Laurindo Almeida also.
Got to hear him once in a club in NY in the 80's. Just he and a bass
player. Fantastic.
There's a book of Hermeto Pasqual's music. Transcribed by
Jovino Santos Neto. Interesting and very difficult music. |

bossa fans, the record laurindo made with stan getz is required listening! you'll love it...
as for hermeto, i'm only familiar with the stuff he did with miles (live evil)...what else should i be listening to?

Hmm, I dont know Igiro, but if he was one of the greates once, he propably still mean something to someone.
The thing about Brazil is that there are so many fantastic musicians, so it can be quiet a task to keep up with all of them.
But for us, the younger generation, I think its more guitarists like Yamandú Costa, and Filó Machado people goes for.
Filó Machado is not one of those Brazilian guitarists mixed with classical, he is more of a Modern João Bosco, he is so rhythmic that I have never seen anything similar.....

Yeah, he is the best.....
Besides being one of the worlds most interesting composers, IMO, he play ALL instruments, and master most of the, flutes, saxophones, other horns.....But his first instrument is Piano.....

Yeah, the book ''Tudo é som'' (All is sound).
Jovino is Hermetos old pianist, and he have recently made another book with 15 tunes that was´nt in the first, in celebration of Hermetos 70th birthday.
There also is the book, ''Calendário do som'' (the sound calender)
By hermeto, which contains 365 tunes.
He wrote one per day during one year, many good tunes.......
And if anyone should be interested, Hermetos bassist Itiberê, has recently released a doubble cd with his own bigband, where they play all the birthdays of the members of the band, thats a fantastic cd..... ....
