Went to my youngest daughter's choral concert last night. She's in the sixth grade. There were kids from three of the elementary schools in the district, our closest junior high, and the select choir from the closest high school.

My life is surrounded by music, as I design and build guitars for a living. Many years ago, I made my living actually playing music, although I do it for fun and spiritual refreshment these days.

So I suppose I'm a bit jaded...but these kids last night "touched the muse"....they did a great job, and demonstrated how several hundred young lives can join together and reteach an old musician a lesson: it's not the instrument, or the venue, or individual talent....it's the combined spirit of many souls that allows an audience to share the muse, and raise the spirit.

I know that I get sidetracked on getting the "right tone", or using technology to assist. These kids showed me it's the commonality of spirit that raises us up. I suppose the solo artist can do it too...but not by himself. The listener has to be involved to make it happen.

And our society as a whole can be sidetracked into believing we need to pay two hundred bucks a ticket to get this experience, when in reality, it can be had as close as your nearest junior high school, church choir, or even local nightclub without the high price tag.

I'm proud of my little girl and what her and her fellow students taught me again last night.

maybe you'd enjoy working with kids?

for all the things i can complain about being a teacher, one thing makes me come back every day-- the ah-ha moment. when i see my students "get it" it inspires me to keep going on "getting it" myself. thanks for sharing your cool experience with us...
