Can anyone recommend a jazz camp / workshop for this spring or summer in the NY metro area? I've been thinking about this for a while and have checked a few mags, but want some real word-of-mouth on good programs for this former rock / r&b / jazz wannabe-now-adult-hobbyist. Shitty sightreading, though.
Also, would welcome references on excellent NYC teachers for one-to-one lessons.
Many thanks. |

There are three really good workshops in the US. However, would check out university jazz programs in the NY area and see what they have. The three best for adults are Stanford Jazz Workshop in CA, Jamey Aebersold in KY, and the Vermont Jazz workshop in VT (of course.)
I have been to the STanford jazz workshop a couple of times and it is outstanding, especially for lousy sight readers.

there's the national guitar workshop, but I never did any of their jazz seminars _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. But I am sure that it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." - Aaron Copland |

| I've never been to one of these type programs,(so take what I say with a grain of salt) but having looked into a few, I saw that for the cost of tuition, travel, lodging and meals, I could take a great many private lessons for the same $$. I'm certainly not saying you shouldn't go; as there's no way to calculate the value of musical friend's you'd have a good chance of making. The collective "group" experience I would guess to be a very positive thing. Also though, I think there is only so much you can "absorb & learn" in a week or two. Figure out all expenses and then maybe think about what that sum would pay for in one on one lessons; maybe a few weeks/months with a couple different teachers and/or some time on Jimmy Bruno's site, PWYH software, etc. |

| Jody Fisher is going to be at the National Guitar Workshop in New Milford CT this summer which is not at all far for you from the city. |

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I was searching through some old posts. I think the NYU Summer Jazz Guitar Intensive is an excellent workshop. I attended it in 2006 and was blown away. The classes are great, and I got tons of info. The best part though was the location, right in Greenwich Village. There were great shows to check out every night. I saw Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter with Paul Motion, Mike Stern, Lage Lund twice, and Ben Monder. Plus the camp had guitarists come in to play for us including Jack Wilkens, Ben Monder, Joe Beck, Gene Bertoncini, Randy Johnston, etc...
It was probably one of the coolest three weeks of my life. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/timkearney |

I did the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop in 2007.
Guitarist Steve Erquiaga was my Combo Instructor.
Saxophonist James Moody was the Guest Artist the final 2 evenings at Masterson's Restaurant.
I had been taking private lessons, but I was stagnating before I went and came home totally energized.
Started looking around and found a Saturday Morning Jazz Class(Alabama Jazz Hall Of Fame - Big Band) about 25 miles from my home. It's mostly high school students with a few adults every now & then, especially when a big name artist comes to town who is acquainted with the instructor.
Saxophonist Lou Marini gave a Master Class last year while in town with the Blues Brothers Band.
Drummer Bill Goodwin gave a masterclass this past July. _________________ M. Noel
