HI folks.

This is going to sound really dumb, but I am about as new to electric guitars as you can get.

I have been presented with an Epiphone Sheraton II for Christmas and I noticed that the pickups have a protective plastic covering on them.

The question is: will it make any difference to the sound if I leave them on?.

Congratulations on the new guitar, Frank. If you are talking about those really thin, flexible plastic covers, almost like paper-thickness, they are there only to prevent scratches up until the time a guitar arrives in its new owner's hands. You are supposed to peel them off, and should do so. Likewise with any of the same material that may be protecting any of the other metal parts on your guitar.

Have fun

Well...if it's a clear soft plastic film covering the pickup then it wouldn't do you any harm to leave it on but it will look like you really don't know any better. Kind of like leaving the sales tags on clothes you've just bought, or the showroom sticker on your new car.

I left the plastic on the pickups for a while. I was so happy with my shiny new guitar I didn't care if I looked like a goober, I wanted to keep it shiny and new. I thought it might keep my caustic sweat from melting the plating off the pickup covers. They peel off eventually and look really gross, like used saran wrap.

also, I wonder if the glue or plastic itself could react with platings, finishes, etc. Probably. Depending on where the guitar was made, it may have lead in it lol
