[Volume Swell]

Does anyone use this technique, or have any interesting tips for using it? The only time I've really ever seen it used is to build up a lot of tension using chromatics.

To give an example of what I'm talking about:

Climbing chromatically, but using different octaves.

I think I read/heard somewere that Don Mock is great with this technique, me myself havent work that much with it. The example you showed was wicked hard (I guess Ben Monder could pull that off!) and the concept appeals alot to me. I think when mastered good enough you get some evil hip phrases going. Im gonna search for some info on the subject for sure.

In the Netherlands we usually include the Bb in the chromatic scale

If you apply this technique to arpeggios you are infact playing drop2, drop3, drop2+4 etc voicings as arpeggios.

i agree that Don Mock is a master at this technique. Check out his books "Turnarounds" and "Melodic Minor" for some of those type of lines. I can't say enough good things about his instructional stuff, great player with some real hip concepts.

I do that a little bit, but not in such an angular sounding way. Sounds a little contrived to me, but I'm not really in that school of playing. You can do the same thing with scales- symmetrical scales work well. Especially whole tone, as it lays out easily on the guitar. Diminished is much harder. There's a thread on The Gear Page about this.
