Hi all, went to see Dave O'Higgins in Swansea Jazzland last night. Great gig, I was talking to a great sax player in the audience, Tommy Harris, and something he said about Dave's playing made a big impact. We were both saying how good Dave was and Tom said "He's always thinking two bars ahead of what he's playing" I thought about that tonight while practising and started concentrating on the chord a bar or two ahead of where I was in the progression. (I use Band in a box for this kind of stuff) it seems to make a huge difference to how musical my playing is, makes the phrasing much more interesting and builds tension and so resolution.
Just thought I'd share that with everyone, maybe it's old hat but I feel like I've discovered something significant. |

Yeah, that's the kind of thing that should go in the "101" category—something one ought to be taught, learn about, and trying to do from the get-go. Just as with reading music you should always be looking ahead, else you get hung up and behind, same goes for improvising (or even playing something composed by memory).
Indeed, this parallels reading and speaking. When you read a book, you don't sit on each word, you read ahead. When you speak, you don't think of one word or phrase, speak it, then think of the next, do you?
Even the better athletes are like this.
Think ahead, anticipate. Don't just react. _________________ lll
