When I started playing jazz guitar, I copied a lot from these albums:
Hank Garland "jazz winds..."
Joe Pass "For Django"
Wes "Boss Guitar"
Everything by Charlie Christian
Django Reinhardt "Djangology"
Pat Martino "El Hombre"
George Benson "Bad Benson" |

Any earlier Charlie Parker (Dial or Savoy labels)
Mingus Ah Um
Art Pepper meets the rhythm section
Clifford Brown & Max Roach
Relaxin' with Miles Daves Quintet
Miles D "Porgy & Bess"
Blue Mitchell "the Thing to do"
Any Art Tatum
Count Basie "April in Paris"
Bill Evans "explorations"
John Coltrane "Ballads" & "Soultrane"
Thelonious Monk "plays Duke Ellington"
Cannonball Adderley "Dizzy's Business" live in japan tracks prev. released as "The Sextet"
...
some of these "make sense" and some are just what take me home.
learn the songs, & steal every arranged or improvised lick that makes you go "woah" |

These are what had the biggest impact on me when starting out:
Wes/Wynton Kelly- Smokin at the Half Note
Miles- At the Blackhawk
Miles- Round Midnight
Miles- Kind of Blue
Max Roach- Plus Four
Max Roach and Clifford Brown (the one with Joy Spring)
Joe Henderson- Page One
Art Blakey- Mosaic
Oliver Nelson- Blues and the Abstract Truth
Ahmad Jamal- Live at the Pershing
Jackie McLean- Swing, Swang, Swinging
Dexter Gordon- Our Man in Paris
Dex- Go!
Some that have been HUGE for me after that:
Eddie Harris- The IN Sound
Art Blakey- Free For All
Eastern Rebellion (Cedar Walton)- Vol 1
Grant Green- Idle Moments
Bobby Hutcherson- Stick Up!
Lee Morgan- Charisma
Ahmad Jamal- The Awakening
Larry Young- Unity
Charles Lloyd - Of Course, Of Course
Peter Bernstein- Braindance
Masterpieces are cool, but sometimes when you're trying to learn you can actually get more from those albums that aren't so perfect. I can barely listen to them now, but I'd recommend the Miles marathon sessions as a good starting point, as you can hear what it was like for a group (an extremely talented group) to simply get together and run through tunes. |

I absolutely love After The Rain by JM. The best playing of his I've ever heard. I transcribed the first couple of solo choruses once from Take The Coltrane, and it just blew me away. I still don't know what effect he has on his tone that causes the notes to taper off as they decay, but I love it and would like to use it. Any ideas?
Love Lenny Breau's double live album at Bourbon Street
We Want Miles
Walkin' - Miles
Medeski Martin Wood - Best of Blue Note
Joni Mitchell - Blue
John Coltrane - Impressions
Ahmad Jamal (live) - Jazz Masters
Beuena Vista Social Club
BTW has anyone heard the new Standards Trio by Kurt Rosenwinkel?
I recently bought the album (reflections) and was impressed. Nice to be able to relate (to the changes) to what he is doing. _________________ Miles is the answer. |

I don't have thenewkurt standards albvum but i have a bootleg of a show he did recently. interesting stuff, and it certainly is a lot more relatable if you don't like his own compositions. _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. the phrase that comes to mind for me when I listen to McLaughlin's solo on Take the Coltrane is "perpetual motion".
I remember when two country boys from a fancy hi-fi store installed my surround sound system in the late 90's. the first thing i plugged in was Take the Coltrane (track 1 on that CD).
after about 60 seconds into the tune, one of the guys looked at me and simply said: "Oh" |
Yes, I totally agree with your comment about "perpetual motion". After transcribing ( I didn't write it down unfortunately, or at least I can't find it now) could appreciate how incredible complex his lines and harmonic thinking were, and I must admit it was the depth of this knowledge that really hit me. But this is dwarfed by the motion, which is what makes it all work so beautifully. He is singing through his instrument and really told a story. Love it! _________________ Miles is the answer. |

If you haven`t checked out the Van Eps books, you`re in for some really heavy work But it`s worth it. I find a new thing to practice each time I open one of the books. |
