|
|
On July 2nd , I will be giving George Benson the second Montreal Guitar Show Tribute Award (last year it was Jeff Beck!)
We created this Tribute Award to pay hommage to outstanding guitarists.
So when I will give him the award, instead of empty words... I would like to offer him words from his fans (you!)... Hopefully some of you at PJG are Benson fans...
So can you help me by giving two words that describe George Benson to you?
Thanks _________________ Jacques-André Dupont a.k.a. Guitarjunky

two words? that's tough...
mine would be, "please doanotherorgantrioalbum." _________________ “For the guitar is the most unpredictable and least reliable musical instrument in existence...and also the sweetest, the warmest, the most delicate, whose melancholic voice awakes in our soul exquisite reveries.”

Igiro, I think the first 4 of yours are right on the money.
IMO all it takes is a listen to his Billie's Bounce studio cut from the 60's to know that he isn't Wes, isn't trying to be Wes, and is a supreme master.
(Wes was a supreme master too IMO). _________________ Attending the Penumbria Hobo Contusion Fest. Twice weekly. |

Huge inspiration & big influence. I wore the grooves out of 'Beyond the Blue Horizon' and 'The George Benson Cookbook'. It's easy to hear him in so many other players too.

I guess George Benson has been my biggest inspiration since I started playing jazz guitar. I`ve just seen him live once, but I was completely blown away. He`s got it all.
Igiro, lots of great points there man. I just like to add
complete artist/musician.
Guitarjunky, what a great award! |

Nothing wrong with a little $$$, fellas. I'm sure many of us could use some these days. _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. But I am sure that it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." - Aaron Copland |

I'll never knock a man for puttin' bread on his table.
But you'd think by now, if george wanted to, he could pretty much record any kind of album he wanted... _________________ “For the guitar is the most unpredictable and least reliable musical instrument in existence...and also the sweetest, the warmest, the most delicate, whose melancholic voice awakes in our soul exquisite reveries.”

How about "Thank you" for both the music and for showing all of us who
struggle in the music business that success is possible and we should keep the music playing. |

For me there are two sides to George Benson, there's the killer, killer guitar player who's jaw dropping chops stuns me when I listen to him play, and inspired me to really get into jazz guitar.
Then there's the singing, which makes me cringe.
I remember going to see him play in Glasgow around ten years ago. He opened with a guitar instrumental, then put it down for a set while he crooned to the screaming middle aged harpies in the front row who were waving panties like he was Tom Jones.
When the second set started in a similar vein we decided to leave.
Chalk and (very smelly) cheese. |
