What can I do to make things a little more interesting?
Would a special group membership area where plain old lurkers can't see unless they're members be of interest?
File and resource hosting is something we already do but not on a user self service level, security issues can be a nightmare, but is it worth digging into?
Help my out here, throw me a bone?

Good ideas Brian (except for the chicken porn  ). I like the membership area one. I would love to see some lessons from any the great players we have in this place. We used to do the 'tune of the month' - maybe we can bring that back.

I've been thinking about this one...I'm guessing "can" was a typo and you meant "can't."
If so, and if my understanding of Google bots is correct, I would advise against it.
I think Google leads people to forums as they search for specific answers -- answers that are often part of threads that Google catches.
And if lurkers cannot see it -- can Google crawl it and catalog it? |

I'm not sure I see how restricting areas brings in more traffic. That seems to rather be away too cut down the clutter of trolls. THAT doesn't appear to be the forums problem AT THIS TIME.

Yeah, my bad, a typo can completely change the context of something. 
You've got the right idea. My thinking of having a private area was so people don't have to worry about what they say being read by ANYONE other than authorized users. So preventing bots from grabbing it and broadcasting it was the general idea.
At the same time, I generally don't like the idea of 'Groups' and why I haven't used them to date. I see it as a form of segregation but was wondering if people would see other benefit.
