Hi everyone!

I have a question about the Hoagy Carmichael song, "Heart & Soul." Of course I am familiar with the popular progression it employs in the verses of I vi IV V

But I am stumped on the middle section in terms of harmonic analysis.

If the song is in the key of C then the middle section has these chords:

F E F A7 D GMAJ7 C G9 E

F A7 CMAJ7 F G9 F E

Is this some kind of key change or modulation? I can't figure out how these chords relate to the key of C. Of course I know the F is IV, G is V, etc but why are A and D E chords major (they would be minor in key of C)

Hope this question makes sense!

Thanks!

Hi wrenblue, I feel you have some mistakes in that set of chords for the bridge. It goes more like this:

ll Fmaj 7/ E7/ l A7 / D7 / l G7 / Cmaj7/ l F 7 / E7 / l Fmaj 7 / E7 / l

l A7 / D7 / l G7 / Cmaj7 / l Dm7 / G7 / ll to A section in C

It goes first to IV (F) then to V7 (E7) of Dominant Vl7(A7) ,then A7 is V7 of
dominant ll7( D7) which is dominant V7 of V7 (G7) of C (tonic). Then back
around again. It's really just going around the circle of fifths , all dominant
sevenths.
Having some wrong chords in there was probably throwing you off.
Hope this helps.

Jazzerchick, thank you! Yes I made some mistakes in transposing the chords from the key of F and now it makes more sense! Thank you.

I was using the chart from the Vocal Real Book and sometimes their chords are not accurate. I changed some which I thought sounded more correct but then they did not make sense harmonically. I made it much more complicated!

Thanks again.

Yes, you have to double check those Real Book charts.
Glad you're on here. This was a really great forum, then everybody dropped off for some reason. Maybe we can get some interest going again.
You play really nice on your website. Enjoyed your solo guitar.
