I am new to Jazz and I was wondering where to start.
I have a teacher, but I study classical, so I can't afford
another teacher.
I purchased The Real Book Vol 2, I thought that might
be a good place to start, since I will be doing this
on my own.
My theory is not to bad, I m at my Grade 6 RCM level
in classical.
What are some easy songs to start with ?

Hello Rick,
There are tons of resources out there and you can use a search around here to see others recommendations.
You may want to go to Play What You Hear and take a look and see if it's something that interests you. |

Rich,
Welcome, when I first started I started off with learning jazz chord progressions, it's nice to learn all the new chords you'll run across. After I did that for a while I learned the easy songs like Autumn Leaves, Tenderley and A Foggy Day I actually still play those songs. Yeah they're easy but as you're learning you keep adding stuff like what Igiro was saying about improvising. As you keep adding to the melody lines, then logically you may want to make it your own so to speak by making your own arrangement. It really is an adventure and when you start playing music with other jazz musicians that's when the magic or the fun happens. hope this helps. |
