|
|
There are times when I practice with my keyboard player that we use a small room (10 X 20). My amp is very loud, so I try to lower the volume. I find that my sound diminishes when I turn the volume down on the guitar. Which is the better for a good sound: guitar volume up, amp volume down or guitar volume down and amp volume up?
Thanks for any advice.

Tim,
Different volume settings can really change the sound of your guitar. I have found that I get the best sound by turning the guitars volume all the way up and adjusting the total volume using the amp. Normally I like to set my guitars volume at 8 or 9, this gives me the ability to boost my volume easily during a solo.

I whole heartedly agree. It is good to get in the habit of having enough " head room " for those moments when you need it.
Secondly, a good volume pedal allows for full pickup volume, plenty of head room and hey; Look ma, no hands! _________________ A good axe will get you through times of no women better then a women will in times of no guitars. Sad but true. |

I've noticed that the tonal quality of most electric guitars i've played diminishes if you lower the volume more than 7. Keeping it at 7-8 would probably give you a good clean tone with enough headroom to boost a solo.
Guitars turned all the way up also tend to overdrive the amp just a tad, especially in the bridge PU position. Not great for those clean smooth jazz solos. |
