I dunno, guy changed harmony like changing gears in a car, scale, (grind-harmony change), scale down..etc etc etc. Wasn't aweful, maybe a couple months in county would give him some more...hmmm passion? |

Well, I have to disagree here. Can explain more, why do you feel he is lacking passion?
I`ve been working with this kind of guitar-playing for a while now, transcribing Benson, Wes and Martino. And I`ve never heard anyone that young that good I think. Anyway, that`s just my opinion
Take care

Jesse van Ruller and Martijn van Iterson, both Dutch. Jesse won the Monk competition 10 years ago when he was just 23. Martijn won the North Sea Jazz bird award last year.
I rate them among the strongest jazz guitar players in the world and I am not that easily impressed.

hey I wanted to name them! They really are good, in fact i'm listening to Martijn van Iterson right now!
I've seen Jesse van Ruller live with Philip Catherine, great concert!

Justin King? Kaki King? Are they realated? Anyways Kaki is nice looking and it's refreshing to see a girl guitarist who doesn't try to look like a dude and she's very talented with that tapping thing. Maybe I missed something but I didn't see any jazz being played is there somewhere else I'm supposed to look? I mean the original post was regarding up and coming jazz guitarist.
Personally folk guitarist are ok and all music is loved but this is a jazz guitar forum. Just my 2 cents. |

Eh, to each his own. Honestly, at this point I feel like if I've seen one person tapping and slapping on an acoustic guitar, I've seen them all. But that's just me, and I'm sure many people feel the same way about jazz, bop, etc. I saw Preston Reed perform once, the novelty wears off for me after about 10 minutes...sorry Preston! |

I had relative thoughts of Nancy Heart back in the 80's. |

| lgiro wrote: | lotsa good players here. some really strong. but back to the original question about taking the world by storm. (think Benson, Metheny, McLaughlin). meaning they break through the jazz guitar fan base into a wider audience because of undeniable and universally recognized talent.
any of em?
or do we think today's music biz and market has rendered such a scenario impossible? |
Well, today's music biz is definately not conducive to a jazz musician/group gaining large scale popularity. But, I do think that one thing that can explain the popularity of guitarists like Metheny, Scofield and Frisell is that they have managed to bridge some gaps between different genres of music, and therefore pull some fans in from other fanbases. Metheny combines world music and folk with fusion jazz. Frisell puts together blues and Americana with spacy jazz. Scofield has managed to tap into the jam band scene by playing jazz that is kind of funk rock based, and good to dance to. So, if we are looking for which guitarists will 'take the world by storm', lets look at who is combining styles out there.
Another jazz guitarist that is gaining popularity among jam band fans is Fahreed Hawk, the guitarist for Garaj Mahal. He was fairly accomplished before joining Garaj Mahal, and has a unique style that combines Indian music with jazz. And again, Garaj Mahal is nice and funky, good stuff to dance to, which is always wins people over.
Another guitarist that I love is Wayne Krantz. He does this jazz rock/fusion stuff that is really raw and quirky. A really unique player if you ask me. You should check him out. |
