[B]BIRELLI LAGRENE[/I]

he's taken europe, it's just a matter of time before the rest of the world recognizes what a monster talent he is.

not just gypsy jazz ~ the guy can bop, fuse, and swing the electric like no one else i've ever heard.

Shocked

I'm shocked that none of you have mentioned Mark Whitfield!

Kurt Rosenwinkel and Anthony Wilson are cool, but you guys need to check out Whitfield. He is in the Montgomery tradition.

I will also mention Russell Malone and Henry Johnson [not so young, but baaad!]. Definitely check out Henry. He's an organ trio guy inching into that Pat Martino relm.

what do you recommend by MW?

Mark Whitfield suggestions:

The Marksman [his first]

7th Avenue Stroll [my personal favorite]

True Blue

Forever Love [beautiful]

Fingerpainting: A Tribute to Herbie Hancock [w/Christian McBride and Nicholas Payton]

Mark has the best bell-like tone and a rare fluidity, but also there is a soulfulness in his playing. It is not just about burning.

Henry Johnson has recorded himself and has on again and off again been on major and indie labels, so finding his current work is difficult, but start with "An Evening By The Sea" which is a digital only live date offered on iTunes. Henry is a fantastic guitarist and a great guy.

Of course, Russell Malone preceded Anthony Wilson with Diana Krall's band. Need I say more. Check out the recording he made with the late great Ray Brown [it was Ray's last recording I believe] and Monty Alexander. Also, check out "Look Who's Here." Russell has been called a Wes clone by ignorant critics, but more truthfully his style is like Kenny Burrell. Whitfield is the closest thing I've heard to a Wes Montgomery out of all the players around.

I should also mention Bobby Broom. He is another great underrated guitarist out there.

I like Neal Alger a lot. He's a local player here in town. He also tours with Patricia Barber. I've seen him play several times and really enjoy his stuff.

That is nice, a old school metheny feel to it. I liked his samples.

Don't know if you would consider him a typical jazz guitarist, but Derek Trucks plays a mean Mr. PC and Afro Blue. Smile

Bireli is one of my favorite guitarplayers, in this clip he's only 11 years old Shocked Playing How high the moon, then switches to bass.
