Any arguments, additions, deletions?
I think 'Misty' should be required material. |

Snap!
In response to the original post I think it really depends on a lot of factors. In some circumstances I think it's best to just look at a bunch of blues and rhythm changes. |

OK, I'll put up a list with the 100 songs and four columns:
1. Can play the melody without looking on the chart
2. Can play the chords in a jazzy way without looking on the chart
3. Can improvise
4. Recorded in my homestudio
then I make a "x" for every step I achieved...
...I hope I get to the end before St Peter calls...

Okay, I've whittled Gorecki's fine list a little further down to what I consider my own essentials. If you know all these tunes by heart, you will pretty much have every chord change scenario in traditional jazz and standard pop. Most other songs will use something familiar from these examples. If you can competently solo over every one, you should consider yourself a pretty accomplished player.
If you are reading this thinking about learning all of these tunes in the near future, I suggest you download versions you like from Rhapsody or iTunes, and then spend a month or two just listening to every tune without the guitar, before you start transcribing or whatever. _________________ Chris

Yeah,
There's alot of really good Standards on your list, some were overlooked of course. I just learned this one and it will definitely do alot for your rhythm studies, it's called "One for my Baby" (and one more for the road) Howard Arlen & Johnny Mercer. It's the song Bette Midler sang to Johnny Carson when he left the Tonight Show, yeah like anyone remembers that... |
