Giant Steps in 7- Yikes!
How about Seven Steps to Heaven in 7? Yikes!
Now, Autumn Leaves in 5 works really well. |

I actually heard a group play Seven Steps to Heaven in 7. It was awesome. _________________ "Without music, life would be a mistake." -Nietzsche |

I just played a gig over the weekend--I was on bass--in a piano trio. It was one of those gigs where the musicians meet each other at the gig, hit the bandstand, and let it rip. We played show tunes, Ellington, 50s, light jazz--i.e., jazz without heavy blowing (don't get too far away from the head of the song) as opposed to "smooth jazz," etc. The venue had about 80 people aged 25-75. Your 100 songs would have carried us along, just fine.
Consider that at the gig this weekend I was expected to read the pianist's book. Well, I couldn't see it from my perch. Thus, I had to put on "big ears" and go for it. Familiarity with hundreds of songs let me anticipate the changes on the few charts that I didn't already know. Listening to the pianist's substitution preferences on turnarounds, etc., helped fill in the rest.

And that's what jazz is all about Agreed Greentone?
So I think. But then who am I!
I agree though. Know those 100 songs and you could handle most situations.

Hey, Frets...
Sorry for the late reply, but agreed for sure. Got the same kind of gig coming up soon. I'm going to be on guitar with a trumpet, bass, piano, and drums. We'll hit the stage and do it. The pianist is going to come up with a set list.
I've played with the drummer in different situations over the years. Everyone else is new. It'll be fun. Expect an audience of about 100. Main thing is to not overplay and LISTEN to the pianist. As Joe Pass used to say, "his piano is bigger than your guitar." _________________ Soul Jazz & Blues |

|

Played a gig over the weekend with my quartet. I was looking at the 100 songs list posted here. We performed the following songs from the list--they drew good response from the audience:
* Autumn Leaves
* Bye Bye Blackbird
* Black Orpheus
* But Not For Me
* Days Of Wine and Roses
* Desifanado
* Fly Me to the Moon
* Getting Sentimental Over You
* Green Dolphin Street
* Giant Steps
* Girl From Ipanema
* Have You Met Miss Jones
* How High The Moon (Ornithology)
* In a Mellow Tone
* Just In time
* Out of Nowhere
* Satin Doll
* Someone To Watch Over Me
* Someday My Prince Will Come
* Summertime
* Take the "A" Train
* There Will Never Be Another You
* The Way You Look Tonight
* They Cant Take That Away From Me
* Wave
* When I Fall In love
* What Is This Thing Called Love (Hot House)
We also did
*Blue Bossa
*All Blues
*Four
*When You Wish Upon A Star
*Lucky Southern
Pretty "vanilla" gig, but given the age of the audience these songs came across quite well. _________________ Soul Jazz & Blues |

Have a gig on Friday at of all places, my local golf club, playing "background music" at the end of the Club Captain's Charity Day. Good vibes, hopefully decent weather and us playing while people eat their BBQ and have a cool one to watch the sun go down.
Anyway, the set list in alphabetical order, is:-
All The Things You Are
Angel Eyes
August One
Autumn Leaves
Bags’ Groove
Beatrice
Blue Bossa
Blue Monk
Bobby's Blues
Bridge View
Chitlins Con Carne
Life Line
Midnight Blue
My Funny Valentine
My Inspiration
Satin Doll
Sonnymoon For Two
St Thomas
Sugar
Summertime
Sunny
Sunshower
Tenor Madness
Wave
Line up is guitar/tenor/bass/drums, so much work for Mango to be doing. Again, most of the set featuring in the 100 list.
A few notable exceptions - Bobby's Blues is by Bobby Wellins, Life Line by Tubby Hayes, both great Brit sax players. August One is a township jive kind of thing (sorry, I don't know the composer) and Bridge View a reggae piece by Jazz Jamaica. Nice mix of classic standards with a few...different things in there!!
Update - the gig went very well and will be playing again this Sunday on the strength of it. Need to tidy up a few things with arrangments and running order, but....all in all, the mix of songs was good and we will only add to it - probably more from that 100 list!! _________________ “It's like an act of murder; you play with intent to commit something" - Duke Ellington |

Hey, this is a fun thing to compare. We don't usually make a song list, but
I'm gonna keep a list on my Sun. gig and see how many I have from
the list. Lots I'll bet. The universal language for sure.
Mango, Which "Beatrice " is that? |

Morning JC
Believe it's a Sam Rivers tune, though the version that I have on my iPod is by Joe Henderson. _________________ “It's like an act of murder; you play with intent to commit something" - Duke Ellington |

great tunes, jazzerchick! lots of my favorites...
you are the 7 string guitarist, i presume...eh, so with no bass, you "comp" for yourself when you solo? are you adept at two line improvisation, or do you play chord-melody, or do you have a horn player that doesn't mind arpeggiating an accompaniment?
any sound clips anywhere? (the website in your profile appears not to be you anymore.)
