when practicing triplets, for example putting on your metronome and going through your scales and arpeggios, do you think its wise to use a down stroke for every 1st beat (up down up, up down up) or just to stick with alternate picking. Dont just say both as I already realise this is an option! John Abercrombie, i know you are a master of triple time so if you're reading this please reply!!

I usually stick with alternate picking, down-up.
I find that most comfortable.
Listen to George Benson when he play triplets. I`ve never heard anything like it. To get this, I`ve worked a lot with playing "staccato." Picking hard with the right hand, and a more gentle touch with the left hand. In my opinion this gives the best sound.
Regarding metronome, try putting the metronome on the off beat when practicing. Or the second/third triplet. This makes you concentrate more on where you play, before or after the beat. Hope this help...
