......As a student new to jazz and having studied for a year with a teacher Question

The reason i ask is that ive been studying for about three months now with no prior knowldge of jazz (just rock) and no theoretical background, and im just trying to gauge what is a reasonable level of progression Confused

Im really enjoying it and thinks are starting to click - slowly - but they are starting to click.

So far ive covered in three months:

- Chord constructions
- substitutions
- alterations
- Major / minor scales
- Basic chord progressions
- Quite a few jazz standards
- Improvising over Aebersold etc
-Following the Mickey Baker course

For three months this seems quite reasonable to me what do you think? I know theres no set pace at which you progress, im just wondering what happens next???

If you were teaching me would you say this is a logical / reasonable position after about 12 lessons Question

What would you be teaching me next Question

By the way, im learning so much from all of you, just grateful for an insight given your experience Wink

Thanks all. Stu Smile

Stupot,
Hey it certainly sounds reasonable to me but I don't teach, but I've had teachers before so I have an idea. How about learning 7 arpeggios in different keys. So that's a total of 28 arpeggios. 7 major, 7 minor, 7 diminished & 7 augmented? Just a thought. later

Cheers Al , ill give that a go! What exactly constitutes an arpeggio Question Is it the same as a 'scale-run' Question

Stu,
Ok like a C major arpeggio starting on the 8th fret fat E string note is C, next is 7th fret A string the note is E, 5th fret on the D string note G, straight down G string 5th fret note is C straight down B string 5th fret is note E then 8th fret same string note is G, then straight down on your 8th fret high E string note is C. So it's C E G C E G C and it's all a straight down thing so you can get pretty fast using these and the idea is to go down, then come back up hitting the same notes. Damn wish I could just do that in the code thing, maybe someone will come by and do another one with that code, oh and if I made an error someone will catch it I'm sure. later

an arp is the notes of the chord played on after another rather than all at the same time.

the notes of the chord are every other note of the scale

C D E F G A B C

C E G B = CM7
D F A C = Dm7

and so on.

Hey Stu, first thing is you can't judge yourself by others. Everyone learns at a different pace, and will pick up some things quicker than others. The other side of it is a lot of the things on your list you never really learn. What I mean is, it's a continuing process -you're always learning them.

This is the only real measuring stick you need- how do you feel when you play? Are you comfortable playing with a group? What hangs you up? What do you feel solid on?

Knowing theory, chord voicings, etc doesn't mean anything to me. It's can you play that's important.
