Timing is one of the most important aspects of jazz (and music generally). The rythmic roots of jazz are the complex and syncopated rhythms of Africa and you have to remind that when you`re trying to get in jazz rhythm. Here some tips to make your impro over 4/4 beats much more jazzy, cooler and swinging. And sorry for my bad english, unnskyld and entschuldigung.

If you here the great jazzguitar players you think perhaps: Damn, they play so cool, nearly too slow. And why ? Because they play the right accents:

First you can play a binary style and this is what everybody does, if he hasn't cared much on rhythm: (A:= accent; n:= normal)

1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....
A.....n.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....n.....

Of course you can play double time or four time or you can start the accents on 2 and so on, but the accents are binary.
But many jazzers use the triples to set accents. You arent't playing real triples like in Blues, technically you play still fourths but the accents are set in a triple way:

1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....
A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....

If you can play the accents in this way, try to start f.e. at bar 2 or 3:

1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....1.....2.....3.....4.....
n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....A.....n.....n.....

Later you can even start between the whole steps:

1.....a.....2.....a.....3.....a.....4.....a......1.....a.....2.....a.....3.....a.....4.....a......
.......n............A............n............n.............A............n............n............A.....

Whith this method you get every syncopation which is possible. When you start with this, you have to count again and again but later you will feel it and won't count any longer. And then you can combine this "triple" style with binary playing or real triples like in blues.
So get your ass up and make yourself free from the chains of natural binary feeling
