I'm working on this song and I got a chart from the New Real Book v3, but wasn't happy with the chords. Here is a link to the chart: http://www.malbanese.com/share/chart2.pdf

I found another chart that shows that it is in the same key (Bb) but this starts out with a Cmin instead of Eb. Here is a link to that Chart: http://www.malbanese.com/share/chart1.pdf

The melody in both charts is the same though.

Now I know that Cmin7 and Eb are harmonically very close but I’m wondering what the consensus is out there on the difference between these two. I'm not sure which one of these is the more "accepted" progression.

BTW - The recording i have is of Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Pure ecstasy[/url]

by default I would go with any sher music company book over most other fake books.

It's certainly going to be Cm, that makes it a ii V I rather then a IV V I. Both obviously are legal and common cadences but you see the ii sub for IV in jazz ussually by default.

I always played that tune as ii V I in Bb then ii V back to Cm for the first half of the tune before it goes th G. But hey, it's pretty similar.

Listen to what the bassist plays on the recording... there will be the answer

Jake,

Thanks so much for the reponse. It makes total sense to use the Cm and have a ii v i cadence. I was playing it that way last night and it sounds much more natural.

I just wasn't thinking about that when i looked at the progression. Gotta start using my brain more Confused

Thanks again.
