I have been asking around about the following as I am thinking I should do some Utube videos.

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent cheap camera suitable for Utube?

There are several small cheap Sony, Cannons, Samsung etc avaiable at the local electronic stores. I guess getting a decent sound from a small camera is the trick. A lot of the bells and whistles (zooms, effects) don't matter much if one just sticks the camcorder on a tripod and pushes record.

However, the sound of cheap recorders might vary greatly. If anyone has any thoughts on this, please advise.

Brilliant... thanks.

The main thing is to get an external mic input, I find. I have a cool little $100 Sony stereo mic with a pin jack I use with my Edirol R-09... or I could use my ADK studio mics with a mic preamp converted to a 1/8 inch. However the Sony mic might be fine.

I found a cheap 1 mega pixel camcorder with a mic in and firewire for my Mac. So far this seems like the cheapest solution at a bit over $200.

It still uses tape, but it is really inexpensive, The DVD, HD systems are all $500 to a grand for good resolution, firewire and a mic input.

You don't need those high priced solutions as long as you can get your decent analog sound and video onto your MAC. The video quality from analog to digital won't be as good as the new DV camcorders but it's the sound that counts.

I have an ancient Panasonic VHS camcorder but no decent additional microphone, and an ATI All In Wonder 9800 video card in the desktop I built a few years ago with a dongle that inputs audio/video directly to the card. I used to have my satellite system hooked up to it to record and burn DVD's.

I wonder if I could patch the Panasonic directly into it? I don't know if the built-in mic will sound any better even if it's patched directly into the card. I'll have to check it out if I ever decide to post on YouTube.

Good luck...

One thing that I found positive is that the price on these entry level Canon camcorders is so reasonable.

The Canon zr800 is only $150 new. It has lower picture resolution than the zr930 at $230, but still it has a mic in and firewire out.

It doesn't come with a remote though, as the zr930 has. That is a must for me recording these short 'one man plays guitar' videos....

I have a Macbook with iMovie, I think that's ideal and what a lot of people use. And I'm not 100% sure (as I haven't done it yet) but I think you can use what ever audio interface you would use in any recording program on your Mac with iMovie. So you could mic up your amp, the band, etc, plus put a mic next to you to speak into and get decent sound quality.
