Hi I'm finally getting my sight reading sorted out after years of avoiding it. One thing that I'm puzzled by thyough is which octave to play in. For example if I read tunes from the real book they sound an octave lower than I expect.

Now I know guitar tends to get written in a lower octave than it sounds but how do you decide when to play as written or go up an octave?

Thanks
Wynn

Usually you play an octave higher than what's written. If you were to leave the guitar part in the original octave, the lowest C in standard tuning would actually be written in the 2nd space in bass clef.

In the Johhny Smith method book, that's how he writes out all the lines. It's a little more confusing that way.
