I just got back from NAMM in Anaheim, CA. WOW. . . I never saw so much music stuff in my life. I went with some band directors from our school district. Did anyone on the forum go this year? What were your impressions? Do you think sales of musical instruments, sheet music, gear, etc. will get hammered by the economy?

Surf's up!!!!!!!!!!!

I think anything music will get hammered.
I know gigs sure are down. I live in an area where we depend on tourism
and convention business. Some conventions scheduled for Jan and Feb
cancelled and they are saying that it hasn't been this slow for 12 yrs. Yikes!
The club where I work is on a hotel property and they say occupancy all next week is only 20%.
In order to survive the next couple of months, everyone who works at this
club, waitstaff-musicians-bookeeper-etc. ,is taking a 10% pay cut so we can
survive. With things like that going on I know I won't be buying anything
from the music store.

I went Saturday.

I was supposed to go Sunday too, but I whimped out. I had been sick all week, so one day was enough. I got all my business transacted and did the hang with a few guitar friends. I missed seeing a bunch of people I usually see though.

I only played a short while at the Peerless booth. No sleep the previous night and the flu made me a bit sluggish so I begged off.

However, Robert Conti came by and did his dog and pony show, which attracted a tidy little crowd. He is really a wonderful player. Personally, I am not really knocked out by the canned background stuff he plays to, but to each his own. I had a guitar student with me, and he thought Robert's little show was peachy.

Andreas Oberg played a bit at the Peerless booth also. Andreas is pretty damn good, for those of you that may not know.

Other friends I saw: Brad Rabutchin, Pat Kelly, Sid Jacobs, Bruce Forman.

Bruce just took over Joe Diorio's chair at USC, so he is around town all the time now. Dropped his new CD on me, bless his heart. It's called Cowbop, a cross between Bob Wills and Charlie Parker. I liked it. Pretty wild stuff. A sort of hip country swing/country bebop. Just the guitar work is worth the price of admission, but he has fiddle, clarinet etc on some cuts, plus a cowgirl vocalist.
