Ha, reminds me of what I was told by an experienced performer when I was still wet behind the ears.
"If you're not getting it over at a gig, the best thing to do is to narrow your focus. Concentrate on the two or three people nearest to you.
Give them your attention.
Make eye contact.
Inspire them with your playing.
Convey your passion, your love for the music, your total commitment to what you're playing.
Win them over.
Then, when the rest of the band is on your side, the audience is much easier................."
