Hey Guys,

Recently started getting into jazz after years of listening to bands (artist) like steve vai, Dream theater, liquidtension experiment, joe satriani, YJM, planet X, meshuggah etc ive started to really enjoy listening to jazz music, I havnet heard a great deal of good jazz music (apart from pet metheny who got me into this style) but I was thinking about going down the local CD tomorow and picking up 5-6 albums

could you guys recommend me a few albums to get me started, pref be-bop kinda stuff,

thanks in advance

I would go for Wayne Shorters "Juju" or/and "Speak no Evil". Great tunes, great musicians, great playing over all. Easy records to get into as well. I would bring them to a desserted island Smile Here is Kurt Rosenwinkel playing El Gaucho from the "Juju" record!

As far as bebop Jazz Guitar, here are some of fave's from Pat Martino:

El Hombre: http://www.amazon.com/El-Hombre-Pat-Martino/dp/B000KP62U2/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b

East: http://www.amazon.com/East-Pat-Martino/dp/B000000YE0

again, not bebop, but there's always the "kind of blue" method.

buy KOB.

then pick up a record lead by each of the sidemen. then, records by the sidemen on those records.

you'll have a sweet wide ranging jazz collection in a few months.

my other rule of thumb is, if it has art blakey on drums or richard davis on bass, it's probably worth having.

Some more post boppers:

Joe Pass - Intercontinental
Wes Montgomery - Boss Guitar

And I imagine someone such as yourself who is into progressive stuff like Dream Theater would probably like this progressive jazz album:

Wynton Marsalis - Codes From The Black Underground

Why not try Kurt Rosenwinkels latest album at Village Vanguard? Should appeal to a progmetal guy like you (if you already havent got it)

i'll second that Sandemose. Incredible album.
Also im not sure if you've heard allan holdsworth. Secrets is a great album if you havent heard him.
Perhaps the south of everywhere by jonathan kreisberg would be a cool one to get as well.

Um, that's Black Codes (From the Underground). Please look up the meaning of "Black Codes" and why Marsalis chose that title. Very different meanings, foolish mistake. That corrected, rather good album, possibly Wynton's best. Not sure what relation it has to crap like Dream Theatre.

You fellas really believe the likes of Rosenwinkle, Kreisberg, Metheny, Holdsworth (who I think I've read doesn't even consider his music jazz at all) qualify as bebop, or if you somehow do, as the best examples thereof? And by the way, there's more to jazz than guitarists. I know this is a guitar-oriented site, but come on.

LiquidtensionJP, I hope you're not getting into jazz with some idea of just using it for your shredding.

Generic Sobriquet - for what ever reason LiquidTensionJP choses to broaden his intrestet in different genres I guess its up to him.

For the love of God LiquidTensionJP, dont let jazz snobs destroy or poison your curiosity for jazz. I sure hope youŽre getting into jazz for using for what ever purpose you might find, even shredding Smile

Best, Sandemose

Man Generic, can something even get more off topic? What do you know about my relationship to jazz? I think its very snobbish to say its more important to you than is it for me. You dont know that much about my preferences and thoughts about jazz. Music is not holy (for whatever that means). People can "ruin" jazz as much as they want. I love jazz either way...

Funny, I just came back here thinking "I better check on that to see if I got the words in the title out of order again" (if I think about it for a sec I remember the right order).

I haven't been around here that long, but I've learned not to expect anything but these sorta comments from good 'ol easy going, open minded, warm and welcoming GS.

Was editing my post while Sandemose was quoting it.

I'm not a so-called "jazz snob," whatever the hell that means (always something different to whomever uses it). But I'll restrain myself from going further lest I get more crap from the post-racial correctness crowd. Hey, it's just music, right? Rolling Eyes

Generic Sobriquet...

The person who started the thread asked for advide or tips on jazzrecords people here on the forum could recomend. I said "Juju" and "Speak no Evil" (two non-guitarist records by the way if you didnt notice), others said Pat Martino, Kind of Blue, Wes Montgomery etc. People wrote what they liked. You started talking about guitarist that didnt qualify as bebop (Rosenwinkel, Kreisberg, Metheny etc) which had nothing to do with the original question. Your contribution with tips on records ended up zero (yes, you seconed that Wynton Marsalis record) but thats pretty much it. The guy didnt ask for bebop records, he asked for jazzrecords. You took the discussion off topic and said that he shouldnt get into jazz if the purpose was to intergrate it with his "shredding". Boooh, I say...boooo I tell you...
