But you'd think by now, if george wanted to, he could pretty much record any kind of album he wanted...

depends on how he likes to spend, now doesnt it? Wink

true enough, I saw him in a sportcoat the other day that I don't think they carry at Target. Very Happy

More power to him. But I'd still love to hear him do another straight ahead record, or heck, even a more old school smooth record like "breezin" or "weekend." No matter what I think of his current music, he's still one of the best who ever picked up a six string...

I don't knock GB for his commercial successes (and even his commercial stuff is pretty dang well done!); but I agree that I'd *love* to hear him return to some of the early stuff, stylistically.

Loved him and Freddy Hubbard together on, like, Sky Diving, and etc.

But, man, 7b5 and others, the man can *sing* in addition to his phenomenal playing. I'm surprised at the "cringe" comments. He's quite a good vocalist.

absotively. his more commercial stuff ain't my bag either but ya gotta admit he does do it very well.

and someone that has made some great, great classic albums of must have gtr music....well, in my book...they get a pass.

"thanks george"

evokes envy.

Benson's recorded output is very frustrating. I think I speak for a small legion of jazz guitar enthusiasts who long for a straightahead jazz record from Benson.

I don't care for most of what he's recorded, even before "Breezin." For instance, on "Beyond the Blue Horizon," he does "The Gentle Rain," which is an awesome tune, but he doesn't even play over the changes, opting to jam over a vamp instead.

Enormously skilled but hasn't showcased his guitar playing in ages.

You would think he'd have enough dough and enough leverage with the record companies to do a side project where he burns it up in straightahead style, but he obviously isn't motivated to do that anymore.

COOL.

And hey we can hope that this sort of attention will inspire him to cut a straight ahead instrumental trio album. Cool

I try to make of this annual event something different for the recipient... and this is clearly very touching... The fact that the fans are the one that told him how good they feel he is was the way to go... Again this year I felt that I got him offguard but that this was a real pleaser... He was very happy about it... and in the evening he gave a stunning performance...

For all the haters: What two words describe what George Benson would think of your playing, performance, proficiency, and musical contribution?
