astringent adj - sharp and acidic in tone: speaking or writing in a manner that is critical and hurtful in tone and content

Still not sure that was the best word to use there.

Anyway voodobop I'm with you on that, I really dig Grant Green's tone most of the time. The non-conformist in me salutes you Laughing

_Greentone_ here. Whew! I sure do like GG's Blue Note tone--especially the early 60s efforts when Green was using the short-neck ES-330. It's an immediately identifiable sound that really stands out from the crowd.

It and Kenny Burrell's 50s ES-175 sound on Blue Note are excellent.

and to bring the topic back to horn zone.... i just love the trio album "Green Street"....where GG plays just a handful of chords on the entire album!

it's almost like he was really going for guitar as horn w that approach on that album.

and what great support from Ben Tucker and Dave Bailey!

Green Street! Absolutely...and for the reasons you suggest, planetguy. GREAT single-note lines in a trio format.
