Hi.
Here`s a solo guitar clip based on all the things you are. Nothing planned, just jamming on the changes. The sound isn`t that great, recorded on my phone, hehe.
Anyway, hope you like it.

Beautiful, Michael. Love the general feel of your playing here.
Seems like you're doing less and less alternate picking these days? _________________ "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconciousness - I wouldn't know. But I am sure that it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." - Aaron Copland |

Thanks a lot guys!
Jake, yeah, maybe a little. It all depends on how I`d like the phrase to sound I guess. ( But I`ve been working quite a bit with economy picking. ) |

Hi,
I am on the learning/beginner side of playing, I am just dazzled by your playing here...Sometimes I can make out chord/melody fragments from the song, other times not as readily.
Your playing here is evocative and fresh.
Can you give any tips on how to start playing 'outside'?
Thanks again for posting this!

Hi Mike. Thanks for listening and the kind words, I really appreciate it.
I`m not sure what you mean by outside in this context?
This recording is basically an example of how I practice I guess. In this case, I focused a lot on triads ( mostly in open position ). And then trying to voicelead them in different ways, using different inversions and "colour-tones". But I tried to always keep the melody in there someplace during the improvisation.
Try this, learn the basic triads, and try to connect them as smoothly as you can. Start from different inversions and string sets. Then you can try to superimpose other triads, f. ex. over Fm: Abmajor and Cminor, over Bbm: Dbmajor and Fminor. Then you can experiment playing the triads dominant; so that over a Fm7 chord you could play these triads: Cmajor to Fm. You could take these simple concepts quite far. Hope some of this helped.

| That's very cool audio, Jazzy. It doesn't sound like you're doing what you described for Mike, but it's very intriguing. You have very nice articulation in this (in addition to the lines). |

Thanks a lot M Yeah, I see what you mean. I don`t play strictly triads, that`s not the point ( at least not for me ). What I mean, is that I use this "triad thinking" as the basis for improvisation. |

Thanks for clarifying and giving me some ideas Michael
I understand triads to be major in sound-the 1,3, 5, R but I think you mean minor triads as well?
I understand going up from a min7 three frets to maj7-Fm7 to Abmaj7.
You also suggest different substitutions in addition to the 3rd higher from - looks like 5th (Cmin7) and the 3rd (Dbmaj7) and 5th(Fmin7) from the Bbmin7. Neat.
I think I need to bone up on the chords in the min and major scales!
I'll take this to my next lesson.
And you can play Cmaj7 over Fm7 ?
Thanks again,
Mike |

Mike, what I meant was triads, not seventh chords. Fm = F Ab C, Cmajor = C E G. And yeah, another way of seeing an Fm7 is just an Abmajor triad with F in the bass.
Here`s one way to start out:
Fm Bbm Eb Ab
e------------------------------------------------------
b------------------------------------------------------
g--------5----------6----------8----------8----------
d-----3----------3---------5-----------6-------------
a----------------------------------------------------
e--4----------6---------6-----------8---------------- etc.
( Also, try it with triads in closed position. ) |

Thank you!
I tried out that sequence, just amazing how new that sounds-
and without 7ths.
I can see the key is the inversion to create the new tension and colour.
Thanks again for this lesson!
