Hey,

Was working one of my original compositions and needed a scale to go with a dominant chord. Using my ears I came up with the following match:

G Ab B C D E F

Mixolydian b9?

Cool. Then I went on to see what the parent scale of this scale was. Stumped!

Could be one of my senior moments, but i don't recognise this collection of notes/intervals from anything common.
What are your thoughts? Are you familiar with this scale?

Smile

Look at it starting from C.

C harmonic minor Wink

Aha! Cool. I've only even briefly looked at that scale many moons ago.

Would you say that the H major is used in much of todays modern stuff?

Cheers Cool

i like the third mode in place of the 'altered dominant'--has 5th, b13, split 9ths, no 4th. nice sound. works over V7+ instead of whole tone; over 7b9 in place of inverted diminished...etc.

sixth mode is interesting for major---#9, #4 & #5 (last line of 'zingaro', for example)...

Nice, will check that out.
I've always used the melodic minor 3 scale for major 7 #5 chords
Probably why I've not bothered with this scale before.
Thanks again.

I like this scale and use it a lot. Quite useful sound! But I never think strictly this scale and then this scale etc...not the sound I`m after. I think more in triads, chord tones, embellishment, substitutions etc...

I had a great article by Mick Goodrick talking about this scale, but I can`t seem to find it anymore...
