Here's something for all you technically minded. My little plan:
I recently bought an Epiphone Sheraton II.
1. I'm going to replace the bridge with a tune-o-matic with piezo mics. I'll use the bridge mics' tone pot for volume. I'll use DI box to send a balanced output to the front-of-house mixer. Therefore I'd also want to be able to use my amp as a monitor.
2. I want to split my signal into two separate amps. One clean and one distorted. And I want to be able to use either clean or both amps simultaneously.
My idea was to have the signal go like this:
| Code: | | GTR -> AB switch -> DI box -> F.O.H. |
Ok. That's simple and works. But for the other 'channel' that goes from the AB switch... well, let's see:
My first amp - let's call it AMP1 - is a distorted amp. It only needs one input from the guitar but I need to be able to mute it* to use only the clean amp.
The second amp - AMP2 (clean) - has three purposes.
1. To function as a clean amp
2. To function combined with AMP1 (this is done by un-muting AMP1*)
3. As a monitor for the piezo. This means AMP2 needs two inputs; one from the guitar and another from the mixer.
*) If I use my Line6 amp for the distorted sound, I can program a silent channel (well not 100% but 97%, just tried it) and use the footswitch to 'mute' it.
So how should I have the signal go from the AB switch? I could use a signal splitter and have one signal go to AMP1 and another to AMP2. Then I'd still need some kind of "combiner" to get both the guitars signal (when playing AMP2 or AMP1&2) and the piezo signal from the mixer. It would look like this:
| Code: | GTR -> AB -> Splitter -> "Combiner" -> AMP2 (clean)
| F.O.H. -^
L-> AMP1 (dist) |
With this system my floorboard would look like this:
1. AB switch - piezo / "electric"
2. AMP1 on/off - clean or clean+dist.
Easy enough I think.
Any thoughts on this? I don't have lots of cash so I want to do this as simply as possible and I wouldn't want to buy two splitters (is there anything as a combiner?).
I'd appreciate any ideas, thanks! |

Well, since no one has answered I'm going to put down a little solution I came up with. I've been planning to trade in my Line6 Spider amp for a Roland Cube 60 which has a line out. This way I could send the clean signal from the Cube directly into another amp where I distort the signal. The distorted amp would still need some kind of muting switch but that shouldn't be so hard to solve (another AB switch with a 'ghost' channel, a tuner maybe?).
Into the Cube through an AB switch would go both an unbalanced signal from the DI (for monitoring, why the heck go via the mixer?) and from the first AB switch.
So...
| Code: |
FOH
/
DI-<
/ \ DIST.amp
GTR -> AB1 \ /
\_____, AB2 -- Cube60.amp -- AB3 -<
\
Tuner
|
AB1 controls whether the signal goes to the electric amps or through the DI (balanced) to the mixer.
AB2 controls whether the signal to the electric amps comes directly from the guitar or from the DI (unbalanced) for monitoring when playing acoustic.
AB3 enables distorted amp or mutes it by enabling the tuner.
No sound engineers here?  |

| AB2 could be replaced by some sort of 'combiner' (reverse splitter)... |

Not sure how things are going with your setup, but I was wondering why you don't mic the two amps? I've been mixing FOH for 24 years and have had the best luck giving players "their sound" by miking their amps and keeping overall stage volumes down.
IMHO there's nothing like hearing a player work the tubes on an inspired solo, something you cannot do with a direct box.
The Morley A/B switchbox works great for me. |
