I Just traded my PRS hollowbody MCarthy model in and bought a Les Paul Studio. Actually it was a swap. Of course I lost money on the deal But the PRS has definate tunning issues for strings above 11's. The prs rep informed us of this a while after purchase. I also have an Epiphone Emporer Regent that holds tune great and I love it more than the prs.
What are your thoughts.

Couldn't the tuning keys have been swapped out for something that could handle heavier guage strings? Regardless, if you're happy with your new guitar, and it sounds and feels the way you want it, it doesn't matter if you lost $1000.

I think PRSi are nice guitars, but I've never played one that just knocked my socks off. Les Pauls are also great guitars, but their prices are way out of proportion. Also, Gibson USA is a company I don't like supporting. (I don't like how they've alienated smaller dealers of their products.) Nevertheless, a great Les Paul is definitely worth owning. The problem is that Gibson's quality control has historically been extremely inconsistent as well. It's not uncommon for people to say they had to go through half a dozen or more Lesters to find "the one".

My personal taste for Les Pauls is in the historic reissues. The R9 and R8 are pretty good starting places (depending on how important a flamey top is to you -- if it is, it'll cost you upwards of $2k more). R7 goldtops are also great values with either P90s or the PAF reissues (burstbuckers?). I almost bought an R9, but I wound up buying this instead and I'm much happier:



It's a Scott Heatley and it's a mean machine with no doubt.

Nice guitar no doubt, looks great probably feels just as good as she looks, but I was wondering with a solid body what type of amp do you use to get a clean jazz tone. Maybe I'll ask that question again, I have a solid body as well, not as nice as yours but can you tell me what you play through when playing jazz. The reason I ask is cause I haven't figured it out yet and my solid body stays home while I use my hollowbody as my main axe. thanks Cool

I mainly use a Carr Rambler which is a great clean amp. I don't really think it's the best "jazz amp" per se. I think it's best suited to a strat or a telecaster played cleanly. However, I was just playing my Heatley through it and it can sound pretty jazzy...but I do have to roll up on the tone knob to get a fuller sound. I also don't really use any other pickup but the the neck pickup when I'm trying to play jazz with it. I kinda' switch back and forth between hollow and solid too though.

I also use a Rivera Jake. Another great amp, IMO.

At some point I may get something else. I'm interested in some of the clips I've heard of this Fargen on Soloway's site. I think it might be a nice amp for playing jazz. I've never tried any of the Polytones or Roland JCs, so maybe that's an option too.

I think I'd prefer the studio regardless. Tuning issues are tuning issues, they commonly have cause. On a standard TOM type bridge it is either caused by, slipping tuners, a nut that's binding...etc.

On those Mcarthys the bridge has a fixed intonation meaning greater gauging of strings then intended all by itself can cause tuning issues that you can't adjust. Honestly I think it's a poor choice of bridges on their part.
