Very Happy

I could give you an awnser...but i'm just learning the ropes on theory so i'm afraid i'd give you a wrong or incomplete awnser. I'm sure there is someone out there who can be more specific.

I realise my answer is wrong it is not New Year's Eve but immediately (like a few seconds) after.

The major pentatonic (C,D,E,G,A,) presumably 'goes with' both classes of major scales M7 and Dom 7 but since we are trying to achieve some sort of graded dissonance, the unhelpful answer is when your ears tell you it's OK. Often used in Rock in, for me a fairly uninteresting way. They are easy to use over many chords but often monotonous. Making them interesting requires considerable mastery e.g. Rollins, Trane.

Forgive me for saying this but if you are looking for formulaic relations between scales and chords which will allow you to improvise then I think your search is a long one. Although these relationships exist they are not as helpful as trying to start with relationships between the arpeggios, (the individual notes) of the successive chords . This give the skeleton on which you can put some meat.[/quote]

I've been struggling with Major scale, Ionian, Dorian and Mixolydian mode, minor pentatonic scale and the bluesscale for a while...then I listened to some Eric Clapton tunes and noticed that he often changed between minor penatonic and major pentatonic (if my ears don't lie to me) and the question about the major pentatonic just came up...I was interested in some opinions to start exploring that scale too...

... just curiosity from a dumb beginner Embarassed ...

The pentatonics as applicable to jazz can be interesting as well, that is, using one out of the standard context of corresponding root note.

Recently I came across a book that suggested the idea that a maj pentatonic scale should be played from the fifth of a Imaj7 chord.

For example, if we are given a vamp on Fmaj7, use a Cmaj pentatonic scale. It gives us the 5, 6, 7, 2, 3 of the I

Oh man, pentatonics are so hip if you just situate them in the right place.

like over Cmaj7 you can do E or B minor pentatonic

over Cm7 us G or D minor pentatonic

Pentatonics with quartal harmonies. Now there's an idea that was prevalent a few years ago. Still can sound good in the right hands. There was another book on chords in fourths in the same series as the Ricker. I may even have a copy somewhere. Quartal harmony is quite easy on the guitar for obvious reasons.

Major Pentatonics sound great over sus7 chords. Play a major pentatonic

scale a whole step below whatever sus7 chord is played, example: B flat

major pentatonic over C7sus. Listen to some McCoy Tyner.

Chick Corea for example shows how to do some real weird things with using pentatonics. If ya play the flat V pentatonic over a I chord, for example Gb Pent over Cj7 you will get great tensions. The system of Corea tells you that it's possible to play every pentanic over every chord, it's only a thing of the grade of dissonance.
Very interesting are these pentatonics:

Vb over I (Gb pent over Cj7)
Ib over I (B pent over Cj7)

Have fun....

A VERY simple, but melodic, minor blues thing from BB King (and others): on I->IV, say change is Cm7 --> F7, switch to F major pentatonic over the F7 (from, presumably C minor pentatonic or C Dorian or whatever...). For instance, hitting the note A (major third of F, from the F major pentatonic) right on the first beat of F7

C minor pent: C Eflat F G Bflat

F major pent: F G A C D

Interplay between these two, the "new" notes (A and D) still fit key C minor, but they (particularly the A) suggest the IV7 chord

I told you it was a very simple idea!
